Australian Tree Fern Plant

Fast-growing shade with a tropical canopy

Broad, finely divided fronds arch from a slender trunk, creating a lush canopy and bringing soft texture to shaded yards. As one of the fastest-growing tree fern species, it can quickly become a striking focal point or an attractive backdrop for other shade-loving plants.

This fern thrives in warm, humid settings protected from strong wind, harsh afternoon sun, and frost. Plant it near a sheltered patio, beside a pond, or beneath taller trees where its bright green fronds can add cooling shade and a relaxed tropical feel.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a sheltered location with bright, filtered light or partial shade. Plant in rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter, keeping the crown above the soil line. Allow ample room for the broad fronds to spread.

2. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply during warm or dry weather, and gently wet the trunk and crown in hot, low-humidity conditions. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture while keeping mulch away from the crown.

3. Pruning: Remove fronds only after they have turned brown or become damaged. Cut them close to the trunk with clean tools, taking care not to injure the central growing crown.

4. Fertilizing: Apply a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer every four to six weeks during spring and summer. Avoid overfertilizing, and pause feeding during cool weather when growth slows.
