Bloomables® Straight Up! Liquidambar Tree

A tidier tree with vibrant, long-lasting color

Bloomables® Straight Up! Liquidambar offers a comparatively compact, columnar form that stays narrow without opening up like many other varieties. Its tidy habit makes it an attractive choice for smaller yards, property lines, and spaces where a broad canopy would be impractical.

Deeply colored foliage provides interest throughout summer before developing vibrant fall color. Developed by the JC Raulston Arboretum at NC State University, this North American native also offers good drought tolerance once established and reliable disease resistance.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a location in full sun with well-drained soil and enough vertical space for the tree’s upright growth. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and about twice as wide, keeping the root flare level with the surrounding ground.

2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, the tree has good drought tolerance, though occasional deep watering is helpful during extended hot, dry periods.

3. Pruning: Little pruning is needed to maintain its naturally columnar form. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter, and avoid cutting the central leader unless it is damaged.

4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring if growth is weak or the soil is nutrient-poor. Established trees in healthy soil generally require little supplemental fertilizer.
