Chirimen Cypress Tree
Beskrivning
Crinkled bottlebrush foliage in blue and green
Named for the dyed crepe silk fabric used to make kimonos, this distinctive Hinoki cypress displays crinkled, congested foliage in multiple textures. Thick, upright shoots resemble bottlebrushes, combining juvenile and adult foliage in shades of blue and green. Brown pollen cones densely cover the shoots in winter, adding another season of interest.
Its narrow, upright form makes a striking textural accent in rock gardens, mixed borders, courtyards, or other places where its unusual foliage can be appreciated up close. Excellent drainage is essential for healthy growth.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a site with full sun to partial shade and perfectly drained soil. Set the root ball level with the surrounding ground, and avoid low areas where water collects.
2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly during the first growing season. Once established, water when the upper few inches of soil feel dry. Keep the roots from remaining soggy, especially during cool weather.
3. Pruning: Little pruning is needed. Remove dead, damaged, or misplaced shoots in late winter or early spring, and trim lightly to maintain its natural upright shape. Avoid cutting back into old, bare wood.
4. Fertilizing: Apply a light dose of balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for evergreens in early spring. Avoid heavy feeding, which can encourage weak growth and reduce the plant’s naturally compact character.
