A vibrant centerpiece with tall stems and large flowers

The Darwin Classic Mix Tulip brings bold spring color with a rich blend of red, yellow, and purple blooms. Tall, sturdy stems help the flowers stand up to typical spring wind and rain, while the large blooms create an impressive display in garden beds, borders, and containers.

Blooming in mid-spring, Darwin tulips can produce showy flowers up to 6 inches across and make excellent cut flowers for indoor arrangements. They’re also among the more reliable tulips for returning in future years, so with the right growing conditions, you can enjoy their colorful display for seasons to come.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Tulip bulbs should be planted after the first fall frost or when soil temperatures drop below 60 F. They can be planted until the ground freezes. Most tulip varieties require 13-15 weeks of cool weather in order to grow and flower. Plant in full to part sun for best flowering. Planting in too much shade can result in floppy stems. Soil should be well drained, as low spots and poorly drained soils can cause bulbs to rot. Tulips should be planted 6-8’ deep and 2-3” apart. The pointy side of the bulb should face up. The stem comes out of the pointed tip and the roots emerge from the rounded base. Plant with a bulb fertilizer that’s low in nitrogen or use bone meal, which is rich in phosphorus. Cover the bulbs with soil and lightly water. After blooms have faded, remove stems and spent flowers, but leave foliage up for as long as possible to pull in light and store resources for next year.

2. Watering: After planting, water thoroughly to encourage root establishment. Once established, these tulips are drought-tolerant, so only water when the soil feels dry to the touch.

3. Pruning: Deadhead spent blooms to encourage a neat appearance and prevent self-seeding. Once the foliage starts to yellow, allow it to die back naturally before removing it.

4. Fertilizing: Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting time and again after the blooms fade to promote healthy growth for next season.
