Compact evergreen with finely twisted needles

Pronounced “John’s Dilly,” this exceptional Alberta-type spruce grows much more slowly and densely than similar selections. Its short, fine needles develop a distinctive twist during the growing season, creating a tidy, richly textured appearance. New growth begins about three to four weeks later than ‘Conica,’ reducing exposure to early spring cold snaps.

Found at Iseli Nursery in 1981, it was named by Andre Iseli to honor his brother, dwarf-conifer pioneer Jean Iseli, and recognize the plant’s remarkable qualities. Its naturally compact habit fits well in rock gardens, foundation beds, small landscapes, and decorative containers, providing dependable year-round structure without requiring frequent shaping.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a location with full sun to light afternoon shade and moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Allow good air circulation, and avoid sites that remain waterlogged or become intensely hot and dry.

2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly during the first growing season. Once established, keep the soil evenly moist but not saturated. Check container-grown plants more often, especially during warm or windy weather.

3. Pruning: Little pruning is needed because the plant maintains a naturally dense form. Remove dead or damaged growth as necessary. If shaping is desired, lightly trim only the newest growth and avoid cutting back into bare, older wood.

4. Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release fertilizer formulated for evergreens in early spring if growth is weak or the soil is poor. Avoid heavy feeding, which can encourage loose growth and diminish its compact habit.
