A graceful green mound with a bird’s-nest center

Jeddeloh Canadian Hemlock is a slow-growing dwarf evergreen that forms a low, spreading mound. Often called Bird’s Nest Hemlock, it develops a distinctive depressed, funnel-shaped center surrounded by bright green foliage with soft, feathery, arching tips.

Ideal for shaded foundation beds, woodland gardens, and small landscapes, it provides year-round color without outgrowing its space quickly. This seedling cultivar was discovered by Jeddeloh Nursery in a German cemetery in 1950.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a site with partial shade and protection from hot afternoon sun and drying winds. Plant in moist, acidic, well-drained soil with the root flare level with the ground, then add mulch without piling it against the stems.

2. Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged; established plants still benefit from supplemental water during hot or dry periods.

3. Pruning: Little pruning is needed. Remove damaged or dead growth as necessary, and lightly shape in late winter or after the spring growth flush while preserving its natural mounded form.

4. Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release fertilizer formulated for acid-loving evergreens in early spring, following label directions. Avoid overfertilizing, which can encourage weak growth.
