Colorful blooms with easygoing resilience
Mexican Heather forms a tidy, rounded shrub covered in vibrant purple-pink blooms from late spring through fall. Its fine-textured green foliage and compact habit add lasting color to borders, walkways, containers, and mass plantings while attracting butterflies and other pollinators.
Once established, this hardy, low-maintenance plant is drought resistant and rarely troubled by pests. It performs as a perennial in USDA Zones 9–11 and can be grown as an annual or overwintered indoors in colder regions.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a location with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Space plants 12–18 inches apart to allow for their naturally rounded growth.
2. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Once established, water when the top inch of soil feels dry; avoid leaving the soil waterlogged.
3. Pruning: Lightly trim in late winter or early spring to maintain a compact shape. Pinch or shear leggy growth as needed throughout the season to encourage fuller branching and more blooms.
4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring. Container-grown plants may benefit from a diluted liquid fertilizer every four to six weeks during active growth.
