Mickey Mouse Tulip Bulbs

These single early-flowering tulips bring cheerful color to the spring garden with bright yellow blooms streaked with red. Each bag includes 11–12 bulbs, making it easy to create colorful groupings in garden beds, borders, and containers. ‘Mickey Mouse’ also makes an excellent cut flower, bringing its distinctive coloring to indoor arrangements.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Tulip bulbs should be planted after the first fall frost or when soil temperatures drop below 60 F. They can be planted until the ground freezes. Most tulip varieties require 13-15 weeks of cool weather in order to grow and flower. Plant in full to part sun for best flowering. Planting in too much shade can result in floppy stems. Soil should be well drained, as low spots and poorly drained soils can cause bulbs to rot. Tulips should be planted 6-8’ deep and 2-3” apart. The pointy side of the bulb should face up. The stem comes out of the pointed tip and the roots emerge from the rounded base. Plant with a bulb fertilizer that’s low in nitrogen or use bone meal, which is rich in phosphorus. Cover the bulbs with soil and lightly water. Tulips do not reliably return for a second year’s bloom. In areas where they are perennial, leave foliage up for as long as possible to pull in light and store resources.

2. Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil slightly moist, especially during the growing season. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings in cooler months.

3. Pruning: Remove spent blooms to encourage new growth and prolong flowering. Trim back any dead or damaged foliage as needed to maintain appearance.

4. Fertilizing: Fertilize lightly with a balanced fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilizing as this can lead to excess foliage at the expense of blooms.
