Brilliant white candles over cloud-like evergreen growth

Especially in winter, brilliant white candles stand out against thick, glossy green needles, giving this Japanese black pine a distinctive two-tone appearance. Its dense foliage provides rich color and structure throughout the year.

‘Thunderhead’ develops a broad, billowy form that can eventually become as wide as it is tall. It makes an excellent specimen for sunny yards, rock gardens, or mixed borders where its bold texture and naturally sculptural shape can be appreciated.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a site in full sun with well-drained soil and enough room for its broad mature form. Position the root flare at soil level, backfill with native soil, and water thoroughly.

2. Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season, allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, it tolerates short dry periods but benefits from supplemental water during prolonged heat or drought. Avoid consistently wet soil.

3. Pruning: Minimal pruning is needed. To maintain a compact shape, shorten the soft new candles in late spring before the needles fully expand. Remove dead or damaged branches as needed, but avoid cutting into old, bare wood because it may not produce new growth.

4. Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release fertilizer formulated for evergreens in early spring if growth is weak or the soil is poor. Established plants in healthy soil generally need little supplemental feeding. Avoid excessive fertilizer, which can encourage loose, uneven growth.
